A dining table that is too large crowds the room; one that is too small leaves guests with nowhere to put their plates. Getting the size right is mostly arithmetic once you know the rules of thumb.
This guide covers seat counts, clearances, and the trade-offs between shapes so you can choose a table that fits both your room and the way you actually eat.
Start with how many people you seat
Allow roughly 60 centimetres of table width per person so everyone has room for a place setting and elbows. As a rough starting point, a table around 150 centimetres seats four to six, 180 to 210 centimetres seats six to eight, and 240 centimetres and above seats eight to ten.
Be honest about everyday use versus occasional entertaining. If it is usually just the family, a six-seater that extends is often smarter than a permanent ten-seater that dominates the room.
Leave enough clearance to move
You need space to pull chairs out and walk behind them. Allow at least 90 centimetres, and ideally 110 centimetres, between the edge of the table and the nearest wall or furniture.
If a walkway runs along one side of the table, factor that into the clearance so people are not squeezing past seated guests.
Choose a shape that suits the room
Rectangular tables suit most rooms and seat the most people, which is why they are the default choice. Square tables work well in compact, square rooms for four to eight diners.
Round tables are sociable and have no sharp corners, making them good for smaller spaces and homes with children, though they become impractical beyond about six seats. Oval tables offer the capacity of a rectangle with a softer footprint.
Consider an extension table
Extension tables give you a compact everyday size with the ability to seat more when guests arrive. They are the most flexible option for households that entertain occasionally.
Check how the extension mechanism works and where the leaf is stored. A self-storing butterfly leaf is the most convenient, while separate leaves need a cupboard to live in.
