Cushions

Odd numbers do most of the work. Three cushions across a two seater and five across a three seater looks resolved; four evenly spaced looks like a display. The arrangement worth copying is a larger plain cushion in each back corner, a smaller textured or patterned one in front of it, and the centre of the sofa left clear so the lounge is still comfortable to sit in. On a modular or deep-seat lounge, scale everything up — 60cm covers hold their own against a large seat where a 45cm cushion disappears. On a bed, work in layers from the headboard forward: European squares flat against the bedhead, standard pillows in front, then one or two smaller decorative cushions. Resist filling the whole seat or the whole bed. Cushions that have to be removed before anyone can sit or sleep get moved to the floor within a week, which tells you there were too many.

Most lounges suit 50cm and 55cm square covers, with 60cm reserved for deep modular seats and 45cm working as a smaller accent in front of a larger cushion. Lumbar and rectangular cushions, around 35cm x 55cm, are genuinely useful on a shallow-back lounge or in a reading chair. The bigger variable is what is inside. Feather and feather-blend inserts are softer, mould around you and look lived-in, but need a plump every few days. Polyester inserts hold a squarer shape for longer with less attention. Either way, the insert should be slightly larger than the cover — a 55cm insert in a 55cm cover always looks half empty, which is why so many cushions sag at the corners. Cushions do their best work through contrast in texture rather than contrast in colour. A boucle or heavy-weave cushion against smooth leather, a soft linen against a flat woven lounge, a fine cord or velvet next to a coarse fabric — each of those pairs adds depth without introducing a new colour to manage. When you do want colour, take it from something already in the room: the tone of a timber coffee table, the warmth in a tan leather lounge, a shade drawn out of the rug. Two accent colours across a room is usually the limit before it starts to feel busy. If your lounge is a strong colour, keep cushions tonal and let the sofa lead. Covers with removable inserts are worth prioritising because they can be washed or replaced, which doubles the useful life of the cushion. Follow the care label — most woven covers prefer a cold gentle cycle and air drying, while velvet and boucle are usually better dry cleaned to protect the pile. Rotate cushions between ends of the lounge so the sun-facing corner does not fade first, and give feather inserts a firm plump and a shake through the middle rather than a karate chop, which just creases the top. When a room starts to feel tired, a fresh set of covers over existing inserts is a genuinely inexpensive reset — swapping heavier textures in for winter and lighter linens for summer keeps a lounge feeling current without another furniture purchase.
