The most common furniture regret is not the colour or the comfort — it is a sofa that will not fit through the door. A few minutes with a tape measure prevents an expensive disappointment.
Follow these steps before you place an order, and note every measurement down so you can check it against the product dimensions.
Measure the room and the spot
Decide where the sofa will sit and measure the available width and depth. Mark the footprint on the floor with masking tape so you can see the real scale in the room.
Leave breathing space around the piece — around 40 to 45 centimetres to a coffee table, and enough clearance to walk past comfortably.
Measure every doorway and turn on the path
Trace the route the sofa will travel from the front door to its final position. Measure the width and height of each doorway, and the width of any hallway, especially where the path turns a corner.
A sofa can often be angled or stood on end to get through a tight doorway, so note the diagonal depth as well as the straight width.
Account for stairs and lifts
If your home is upstairs, measure the stairwell width and the turning space on landings. For apartments, measure the lift door and internal car dimensions, and check whether there is a service lift.
Where access is genuinely tight, modular lounges are a practical answer because they arrive in sections that are far easier to manoeuvre.
Check the product dimensions
Compare your measurements against the listed width, depth, and height of the sofa. Remember that the overall depth includes the back cushions, and that legs can sometimes be removed to gain a few centimetres during delivery.
